The mechanism of being seen and seeing
The fickle connection of attraction
The heart jumps
In joy
In shock
How complex!
How simple!
A grasp on something fragile and thin
A sheet of ice, Spun sugar
And warm hands that melt it, the weak thing
Hands that have no grip but desperate and white knuckled.
To watch that something trickle away
and misunderstand it’s demise.
Why next time I won’t touch the thing at all
And save the suffering of losing it.
Hands hung neatly to sides
Still, like a child chastised
But watching, desirous of something so precious
And agonize over how wrong it had been held.
And keep myself from want.
But restraint was what bore a grasp untried
Unknowing and clumsy, it had dissolved
over fingertips untrained
Be still, my writhing fears!
And try and try again.

Hadn’t the first steps from home been so laden, hopeful in their prideful gate. The sprout parts soils and knows not the frightful world above. It only desires for the sun, the bright surface atop the damp, dim holes of the earth. To unfurl foliage from its tight coil in that golden light, to feel rays alight on the gentle facets of leaves... that is a consuming want. I push forth arduously for the sake of such belonging.
But at ground’s break, the sun’s great distance strikes lamentable. Under soil, the thought of it seemed so close, as if green fronds could cradle that golden curve and pluck it from the sky. How uncaring it looks, traveling a long, solitary arc across the heavens. The soil I cling to cracks dry in the heat and pools in muddy clay to the infrequent rain.
Have I grown callous and woody in the harsh exposure? Does my flower wilt, my leaves flavor bitter and astringent? But please, I beg a part of me to be soft and weightless, generous and inspiring of wonder.
